On shelves in New York this week, a new whiskey blend is drawing attention ahead of the Fourth of July. Called United States of Bourbon, the release combines bourbons sourced from all 50 states. It is the result of years of travel and tasting by Nora and Adam Polonski, founders of Lost Lantern, a Vermont-based independent bottler.
The couple spent several summers sourcing barrels from distilleries across the country. The final blend, released this month, arrives as distillers and bars prepare for the 250th anniversary of American independence. Bottles are priced at $100 and can be found at specialty retailers in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Bartenders at American Whiskey in Midtown reported steady interest over the weekend. "People ask about the story," said bar manager Luis Cancel. "They want to know what Montana bourbon tastes like next to Kentucky."
Several other distilleries have also released limited-edition whiskeys tied to the anniversary. But United States of Bourbon is the only one so far to blend spirits from every state. Tastings are scheduled at select bars in the coming weeks, including Astor Wines and The Flatiron Room.
As the summer holiday approaches, the city’s whiskey bars are bracing for holiday crowds. Many are planning special flights featuring the blend. At least for now, supplies appear limited.
