Somssi, a new restaurant from Ahris Kim, is set to open in Greenwich Village next Wednesday. Kim, known for her work in the front of house at Atomix and Atoboy, is stepping into the role of owner for the first time. The restaurant will begin service on June 3.
Located on West 8th Street, Somssi occupies a narrow storefront between Sixth Avenue and MacDougal Street. The space was still receiving finishing touches on Thursday afternoon, with contractors visible through the front windows. Kim was on site, overseeing deliveries and meeting with staff ahead of next week's opening.
Kim's background includes shaping the guest experience at some of the city’s more acclaimed Korean restaurants. At Atomix, her focus was hospitality and service. For Somssi, Kim has said she intends to offer a menu informed by home-style Korean cooking, with a focus on seasonal produce. Pricing and hours have not yet been posted in the window.
The opening comes as the neighborhood sees steady foot traffic from NYU students wrapping up the school year and early summer visitors. Last weekend, nearby Washington Square Park saw increased crowds for the start of festival season. Restaurant operators in the area are preparing for the usual uptick that comes with June.
Somssi joins a cluster of recent openings on West 8th, a stretch that has seen new interest from independent restaurateurs since early spring. Reservations for opening week are expected to be available online.
