Popcorn shrimp baskets are drawing attention this week as national chains promote seafood deals ahead of the summer season. A report published Friday noted that one major chain is selling a popcorn shrimp basket for under $9, making it among the cheapest in the country.
At a Times Square location late Friday afternoon, the menu price for the basket was listed at $8.79 before tax. The meal includes fried shrimp, a side of fries, and a small portion of coleslaw. Staff said the item has sold steadily since the weather began to warm and more tourists returned to the city center.
The price stands out as seafood costs have generally trended higher at local restaurants this spring. At several Midtown diners, similar baskets are priced at $13 or more. A manager at a Hell’s Kitchen seafood bar said the lower-cost chain options are attracting families and students on weekend afternoons.
Seafood promotions are expected to continue into June as chains compete with independent restaurants for foot traffic. Some chains are also offering limited-time discounts on other fried seafood items, including clam strips and fish sandwiches.
