Chipotle Mexican Grill is testing a new crispy chicken protein at a handful of its restaurants. The company has not announced a citywide or national rollout. The item, described as breaded and seasoned chicken strips, is only available at certain stores.
In Midtown on Tuesday afternoon, customers at the 45th Street Chipotle said they had not seen the new option. An employee behind the counter confirmed it was not yet available in Manhattan. Social media posts indicate the test is underway at stores in other markets.
Chipotle’s menu has rarely featured fried items. The chain’s protein offerings have focused on grilled chicken, steak, and plant-based options. A crispy chicken item marks a notable departure from its standard preparation.
On West 23rd Street this week, lunchtime lines continued to move steadily. Several customers said they would try the new protein if it appeared. “I’d order it once to see if it’s good,” said Michael Kim, a software engineer waiting for his burrito bowl.
A Chipotle spokesperson said there are no immediate plans for a citywide launch. The company is collecting feedback from guests in test markets before making further decisions.
