Circle Bar, a Santa Monica staple, reopened its doors this week after a prolonged closure and change in ownership. The bar, located on Main Street, had gone quiet in August 2023, leaving regulars and staff uncertain about its future. The reopening comes as summer crowds begin to fill the sidewalks near the beach, with patrons stopping in after sunset for drinks and music.
The venue has a long history as a late-night destination. Past visitors include actors Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr., but in recent years, it had become more of a neighborhood standby than a celebrity haunt. On reopening night, bar staff reported a steady flow of both longtime regulars and curious newcomers. Most ordered familiar cocktails, with beer and well drinks leading orders at the bar.
A new management team has taken over, but the Circle Bar’s layout and decor remain largely unchanged. The signature circular bar, dark wood paneling, and neon sign out front have been restored. According to staff, the jukebox and dance floor are both back in use, with music scheduled nightly through the summer.
Prices have increased since the last operating summer, with most cocktails starting at $14. The bar will operate daily, staying open until 2 a.m. on weekends. Management indicated that food service will return later this month, but for now, the kitchen remains closed.
The reopening adds another late-night option to Main Street, at a time when many bars have shortened hours or closed. For now, the Circle Bar is again part of Santa Monica's nightlife, drawing a mix of old and new faces.
