Bars on the Lower East Side reported steady orders for Cosmopolitans this Friday night. Staff at Attaboy on Eldridge Street prepared more than 30 of the tart, pink cocktails between 9 p.m. and midnight. Bartenders credit the renewed interest to a recent spike in afterwork gatherings and small celebrations as the city settles into August’s heat.

The Cosmopolitan, made with vodka, cranberry juice, triple sec, and fresh lime, has seen waves of popularity in New York. This summer, its citrusy profile and bold color fit with the season’s demand for lighter, colder drinks. At Dante on Macdougal Street, the manager noted that customers often request the drink by name, opting for its balance of sweet and sour over heavier classics.

Some bars have adapted the recipe, swapping in blood orange liqueur or house-made cranberry syrup. Prices for a Cosmopolitan range from $16 to $22, depending on the venue and the spirits used. At a midtown hotel lounge on Thursday, a bartender said, “We’re seeing people order them in rounds, especially with the early evening crowd.”

With rooftop spaces and sidewalk tables at capacity on Saturday nights, the Cosmopolitan’s bright color stands out across city patios. While the drink’s origins date back decades, its current popularity appears tied to the city’s late-summer social tempo. Several bartenders expect the trend to hold until the weather cools in September.
