A hand roll operation that gained a following through low-cost pop-ups has opened its first brick-and-mortar location on East 7th Street. The storefront debuted quietly last Thursday, drawing a steady lunch crowd from nearby NYU offices and summer language schools.
Prices remain below $6 per roll. The menu lists salmon, spicy tuna, and cucumber, served in crisp nori, with a few seats at a narrow counter. Hours run from noon to 9 p.m., with most traffic in the early evening as students and neighbors stop in on their way to Tompkins Square Park.
The shop’s owner, Jun Park, managed pop-ups at Lower East Side bars last year. He says the permanent location allows for later hours and a wider selection, including a rotating special and miso soup. "We’ll listen to what the block wants," he said on Friday afternoon, handing over a tray of yellowtail rolls to two regulars.
This stretch of the East Village has seen a handful of new openings since spring. A vegan bakery opened two doors down in June, and a frozen yogurt shop debuted in July. The hand roll spot keeps its menu simple and emphasizes counter service, aiming for a fast turnover with no reservations.
The opening comes as heat lingers over the city and many residents look for quick, affordable dinners before heading to the park or the river. Staff expect to add late-night hours on weekends in the coming weeks.
