Melba’s Restaurant, a fixture on West 114th Street in Harlem, is set to become the inspiration for a new comedy series on Apple TV. The show, titled 'American Comfort,' draws from the life and career of owner Melba Wilson, who has run the Lenox Avenue soul food spot since 2005.
Apple TV announced that Kenya Barris, known for his work on 'Black-ish,' is attached as writer and executive producer. Oprah Winfrey is also among the producers. The lead role will be played by Danielle Brooks, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 'The Color Purple.'
Melba’s is best known for its chicken and waffles and as a steady presence in the neighborhood, attracting locals and tourists alike. On Saturday mornings, regulars line up before noon for brunch plates that rarely exceed $20. Wilson is often seen greeting customers, especially during Harlem’s spring festival season, which is now underway.
The series has not yet received a premiere date. Apple has indicated that production is in development. Filming details and casting beyond Brooks have not been announced.
Wilson has said in past interviews that she wants the show to highlight the role of family-run restaurants in their communities. The announcement comes as Harlem prepares for a wave of street fairs and outdoor dining events this season.
