Early morning diners across Manhattan are seeing more high-protein breakfast options on local menus. On Tuesday at Jack’s Wife Freda in SoHo, the kitchen sent out house-made chicken sausage and cottage cheese pancakes to a steady stream of tables. Staff say the demand for protein-heavy plates has risen since Labor Day, as commuters and students look for filling meals before work and school.

At Daily Provisions on East 19th Street, the chef’s special this week features a berry smoothie with an extra scoop of cottage cheese. The dish costs $9.50 and has been selling out before 10 a.m., according to the front counter. Nearby, Black Seed Bagels has begun offering a smoked salmon and egg salad option for the first time this season.

Nutrition remains a draw. Registered dietitian Hannah Lee, who consults with several Lower Manhattan cafes, notes that "a balanced, protein-forward breakfast can help with focus and energy during busy fall mornings." She reports that local spots are experimenting with Greek yogurt bowls, nut butter toasts, and even tofu scrambles.

The shift comes as colder weather and shorter mornings send more customers indoors. Most places are keeping prices between $8 and $14 for these new breakfast items. Operators say they expect the trend to hold through the end of September, as outdoor seating gives way to packed weekday brunches.
