Katz’s Delicatessen on East Houston Street has reopened a private dining room that had been closed for decades. The space, hidden behind an unmarked door, was rarely seen by customers in recent memory. Its renovation finished earlier this week, according to management.
The deli’s co-owner, Jake Dell, said on Wednesday that the project aimed to preserve the character of the room while updating its fixtures. The private area now features restored wood paneling and vintage photographs from the deli’s archives. Original light fixtures were salvaged where possible.
The room is available for group bookings and private events. There is seating for up to 40 people. On Wednesday afternoon, staff set tables with the deli’s signature half-sours and mustard, preparing for an early dinner booking.
Katz’s, open since 1888, continues to draw a steady mix of regulars and tourists, especially during summer evenings. The reopening of the private dining room comes as Lower East Side restaurants report strong demand for group spaces during graduation season and family gatherings.
