A recent survey has found that New York is not the most expensive state for pizza, despite its reputation. The report, released ahead of peak summer travel, compared average prices of a plain slice across the country.
Connecticut now holds the distinction of the highest average cost for a single slice. The survey cites prices topping $3.50 in some towns. In New York City, a plain slice still hovers around $3 at many counter spots, though some Manhattan shops charge more.
On Sunday, diners at Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street shrugged off the news. “We pay for convenience, not just cheese,” said one lunchtime customer, pointing to the lunchtime crowd that stretched to the sidewalk.
The report arrives as summer road trips pick up. Travelers driving north or east may find themselves paying more when stopping for pizza in Connecticut than in Brooklyn or Queens.
Industry analysts suggest higher ingredient and labor costs are driving prices up in the Northeast. For now, the classic New York slice remains a relative bargain compared to its neighbor.
