With Fourth of July less than three weeks away, local bakeries and restaurants are finalizing their seasonal dessert menus. In Carroll Gardens, Pasticceria Monteleone has begun testing cherry-lemonade tarts using fruit from the Union Square Greenmarket. On the Lower East Side, Supermoon Bakehouse is planning to offer a grilled pound cake sundae for the holiday week, topped with sour cherry compote and vanilla ice cream.
Some restaurants are adapting classic desserts to suit outdoor celebrations. At Diner in Williamsburg, pastry chef Lila Warren said the team is working on a red, white, and blue trifle that can be packed for picnics in nearby Domino Park. "Guests want something easy to share," she said on Sunday afternoon, "especially if they're headed to the waterfront."
Grocery stores are also seeing early demand for seasonal ingredients. Staff at Essex Market reported a run on fresh berries and lemons over the weekend. "We always see a bump in the last week of June," said produce manager Chris Delgado. "People are already planning what to bake."
Several neighborhood restaurants plan to keep kitchens open late on July 4 itself, anticipating post-fireworks crowds. In Astoria, Martha's Country Bakery expects lines for their holiday-themed cheesecake slices after 10 p.m. Owners say they will add extra staff on dessert stations to handle the rush.
With summer heat persisting and more residents staying in the city, operators are betting on takeout-friendly sweets. Expect to see more single-serving pies and icebox cakes on offer as the holiday approaches.
