A Brooklyn woman, Cristy Cooper, is recovering in the hospital this week after being diagnosed with a severe parasitic infection. Cooper, 51, described her symptoms as persistent gastrointestinal distress, including noisy flatulence and debilitating diarrhea. She spoke about her experience from her hospital bed on Wednesday.

Doctors at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital have seen an uptick in cases of intestinal parasites this summer. Staff attribute the rise to recent stretches of hot, humid weather and increased outdoor dining. Health officials point to improperly washed produce and undercooked food as likely sources.

The city’s Department of Health has issued a reminder to restaurants and food vendors about proper food handling. Inspectors have performed spot checks at several outdoor markets and sidewalk stands in Bushwick and Jackson Heights since Monday. No major violations have been reported so far, but officials urge caution as holiday crowds grow ahead of the weekend.

Cooper says she began feeling ill last Sunday after eating at a casual outdoor café in Park Slope. Her case, while severe, is not considered life-threatening. Doctors recommend anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever contact a medical provider, especially during the summer heat, when dehydration is a risk.
