The New Museum on Bowery is adding a new chapter to its presence on the Lower East Side. Oberon, the museum’s first full-service restaurant, is set to open on Tuesday, July 7, inside the museum’s expanded space at 235 Bowery, near Stanton Street.
The restaurant arrives as part of the museum’s recent physical growth. Construction on the expansion concluded earlier this summer, increasing gallery and public areas. Oberon will serve museum visitors and neighbors from lunch through early evening, with hours shifting as summer crowds fluctuate.
Menus are anchored by vegetable-forward plates. On a preview visit Thursday afternoon, tables were set with shaved fennel salad and chilled pea soup. Main courses include grilled fish and a roast chicken plate, with prices for entrees ranging from $24 to $36.
The dining room seats about 60, with large windows facing the Bowery. Art posters line the walls. Oberon will also offer takeout for those passing through, according to staff on site this week.
Museum officials say the restaurant is open to the public, not just ticket holders. Reservations are available online, with a few walk-in tables held for neighborhood regulars.
