As Memorial Day crowds thinned this week, outdoor griddles are seeing a bump in use across New York City. With temperatures finally rising above 70 degrees, residents in neighborhoods like Astoria and Sunset Park are moving their cooking outside, swapping stovetops for flat-top griddles.
At Whisk, a kitchen supply shop on Broadway in Williamsburg, staff noted a steady stream of customers asking about propane-powered models and accessories. Prices for basic griddles range from $180 to $350, with larger, restaurant-style versions exceeding $500. According to store manager Priya Malik, most buyers this month are looking to prepare breakfast foods and quick lunches for small groups.
The appeal, Malik said, is the ease of use. "People want something that heats up fast and can handle pancakes or burgers without a lot of prep," she explained. "It’s less intimidating than a charcoal grill." Several customers on Tuesday morning listed apartment building courtyards and rooftop patios as their planned cooking spots.
Outdoor griddles, unlike traditional grills, offer a flat surface that retains heat evenly. This allows for a range of foods, from eggs to vegetables, without the risk of pieces falling through grates. Safety remains an issue in some buildings, where open flame appliances are restricted. Still, portable units designed for electric outlets are gaining traction.
Seasonal events, including block parties and end-of-school gatherings in June, are likely to keep demand high. Malik expects sales to continue through July, especially as more residents host weekend brunches outdoors.
