On Thursday afternoon, lines stretched down Lexington Avenue outside Butterfield Market. The draw was a viral dessert known as Dot Cakes. The cakes, small frosted rounds in bright colors, have appeared in hundreds of short videos online this month, many filmed at the Upper East Side store.
Inside, staff moved quickly to keep up with demand. Dot Cakes, sold individually and in boxes, were priced at $5 each. Some customers waited more than an hour. Several in line cited TikTok clips as their reason for visiting.
Taste reviews were divided. One customer, Rachel Kim of Yorkville, called them 'all sugar, no flavor,' while another, Ben Torres, said, 'It’s just fun to try.' The cakes’ pastel frosting and layered sponge have become a frequent backdrop for phone cameras and group selfies inside the shop.
Butterfield Market’s manager declined to comment on sales figures but confirmed the cakes would remain available through June. The store plans to restock daily. Nearby businesses reported increased foot traffic during after-school hours and weekend mornings.
The popularity of Dot Cakes highlights a familiar pattern: online trends driving real-world lines. Whether these cakes will remain in demand as summer begins remains uncertain.
